Hello Dresden Family! I want to say how much we miss seeing our students as well as our parents. It is certainly harder to connect. Please know your counseling team is here to support you all as we go through this time of COVID-19 together. This blog is to give you information about ways to keep yourselves mentally healthy as we move through this time. It is also to give you information about emotions that can become strong – and sometimes overwhelming – in students and parents alike. Much of this information can be found at the DCSD website under “parent resources”. It’s a good site to check out. (https://www.dekalbschoolsga.org/parents/)
Today’s blog is going to talk about stress and anxiety. These are two emotions that can get in the way of thinking clearly. This can affect a student’s ability to learn and grow. Here is a good video for students about the role that stress, and anxiety play in their brains – and how sometimes students can receive false signals: https://youtu.be/FfSbWc3O_5M. In addition, I have two websites that can help you with ways to deal with stress, and better understand anxiety. “If you are feeling stress about the COVID-19 pandemic, your brain isn’t misfiring. Stress is a normal, healthy biological response to perceived threats and challenges. It’s a response that gets us ready to act — to protect ourselves and our loved ones.” (read more about how to manage the stress at: https://www.pbs.org/parents/thrive/how-you-and-your-kids-can-de-stress-during-coronavirus) “Anxiety is one of the most common mental health concerns for children and adults, affecting upwards of 20% of children and adolescents over the lifespan.” (read more about anxiety at: https://www.anxietycanada.com/learn-about-anxiety/anxiety-in-children/) I hope this information is helpful. You can contact me (Ms. Blackstock - counselor 3-5 grade) via text or voice mail at 404.492.9163. You can contact Mrs. Ndonga (counselor PK – 2 grade) via her email at Lucy_Ndonga@dekalbschoolsga.org
